FIFA

It is coming to the point in the year, when the nation starts to think about who deserves to be the sports personality of the year. In this article I am going to write about who I think will win this years award as well as about the other possible contenders.

The year started with so much hype with events such as the Fifa world cup to look forward to. The performance of the English team was not exactly the best and it is unlikely that a footballer will win the award. I actually believed England had a realistic chance of winning the trophy and was not very happy at the way the team played or approached the games, it was far too negative.

Our cricket team have not really continued how they left off after their success in the ashes of 2005. They have had a mixed year with some very poor one-day form. To be fair the team has had a lot of injuries to contend with, but again I do not think that a cricketer will win this years award.

In golf the European team claimed their third straight victory over the United States in the Ryder Cup, in emphatic style. The team bonded superbly as a unit and from the outset there only really looked to be one likely winner, which of course was Europe. From this group of players comes a man who in my opinion should win this years award of sports personality of the year. There were some great individual performances but I think Darren Clarke did extremely well and showed great character. He played in three matches and was victorious in each of them, winning three valuable points for his team. This was only a few weeks after the sad death of his wife from cancer.

Andrew Murray has had a great year and is steadily climbing the world rankings in Tennis. He is now up into the top twenty of players where he was not even in the top one hundred a year ago. He is also a strong contender for the award.

For the award of overseas personality of the year I think that there is only really one contender, Tiger Woods. He also has had to come to terms with the loss of a close family member this year, his father. Despite this he has played some great golf and has just won the last six stroke play events. His performance in the Ryder Cup was not up to his usual standards however he did still win some matches. I hope he wins this award, as to win six tournaments in a row is quite unbelievable.
